Anna Solcaniova King
I’m a fine artist, photographer, designer, and former curator, originally from Slovakia (formerly Czechoslovakia), now living in the USA. Slovakia’s rich cultural history, from traditional folk art to modern and contemporary styles-especially during the turbulent times of my homeland-has deeply shaped my perspective and inspired my creative journey.
Growing up, I witnessed Soviet totalitarianism and experienced the challenges of communist oppression firsthand. Rather than breaking my spirit, these experiences inspired my passion for art and hope for freedom. In high school, I became involved in activism, speaking out against the Communist regime. This rebellious spirit led me to participate in the Velvet Revolution of 1989, a historic turning point that brought an end to communist rule in Czechoslovakia.
Pursuing an art career in Slovakia was no easy path, with limited opportunities and fewer art schools compared to the West. After earning a degree in Art History in Banská Bystrica, I began to explore the world. I worked for several years as a travel agent and history guide in Venice, Italy, which allowed me to deepen my knowledge of Italian art and history, learn the language, and save money to take the next step in my journey: moving to New York City. There, between freelance jobs, I had the opportunity to work in the fashion and editorial industry as a set designer at Chad Dziewior’s Studio and Katy Barker Agency, collaborating with some of the most talented photographers and designers.
After the tragic events of 9/11, I moved to Los Angeles, where I initially worked in the movie production industry. I also had the privilege of working for pop-artist Steve Kaufman, Andy Warhol’s former assistant. Eventually, I settled in Portland, Oregon, where I refined my artistic and curatorial voice as a curator and artist at the former Anka Gallery.
My creative work spans three mediums—painting, photography, and design—through which I explore the boundaries between each to create unique visual expressions. I paint with acrylics on canvas or wood panels, creating works that range from abstract compositions to figurative pieces and landscapes. Over time, my practice has evolved into a deep exploration of patterns, often derived from my original photography or elements of my fine art. This ongoing experimentation merges mathematical precision with an esoteric sense of inquiry, offering a distinctive perspective on the interplay of nature, form, and abstraction.
In addition to my creative work, I’m passionate about journalistic activism and have worked for several years as an investigative journalist with the Greg Palast Investigative Fund, advocating for human rights and the environment.
My life and work reflect a journey that has shaped me; a story of resilience, curiosity, and passion for art. I reside with my family in the Pacific Northwest of the USA.
